Insomnia has basically become a modern-day epidemic.
When you can’t sleep at night, the next day feels ruined.
And if that keeps happening, both your body and your emotions hit a low.
A few months ago, I went through a stretch where I was lying awake until 3AM.
Out of desperation, I started trying out sleep aid apps—
and a few of them actually helped.
Here are three free ones that worked for me.
1. [SleepTown] – Build a City by Sleeping on Time
- What it is: A gamified sleep app where a virtual city gets built when you sleep at your set time.
- Why it works: Turns going to bed into a game with rewards.
- My take:
“Putting down the phone before bed is harder than it sounds.
But this app? If you don’t sleep, your building doesn’t get built.
That pressure helped me stick to my bedtime for the first time in years.” - Heads-up:
You have to launch the app and leave your phone screen off for it to work,
so it really forces you to cut phone time at night.
2. [Mooda] – Emotion Diary + Sleep Pattern Tracker
- What it is: A super simple app where you log your daily mood using icons,
and jot down when you went to sleep. - Why it works: You start noticing patterns between how you feel and how well you sleep.
- My take:
“On the nights I couldn’t fall asleep,
I usually logged feelings like ‘frustrated’ or ‘stressed.’
Seeing that connection helped me manage my evenings better.” - Tip: Take a minute before bed to log your day.
That tiny routine helps you mentally slow down.
3. [Calm] – Meditation, Nature Sounds, Sleep Audio
- What it is: One of the world’s most popular sleep meditation apps.
- Why it works: Smooth background sounds help ease anxiety.
- Downside: Some features are locked behind a paywall,
but the free sounds are still plenty. - My take:
“On anxious nights, I’d play the sound of a river flowing.
It felt like the noise in my head was finally turning down.
I’d be asleep in less than 30 minutes most times.”
The reason behind insomnia may differ for everyone,
but the common thread is this: once it starts, it’s hard to stop on your own.
So don’t hesitate to lean on a good app or two.
You need to sleep—because tomorrow depends on it.
And if you’re reading this while tossing and turning,
I really hope tonight’s the night you sleep just a little better.
